What is an LSPN?

A Location Specific Practice Number (LSPN) is used by the Department of Human Services to uniquely identify practice sites that provide diagnostic imaging and radiation oncology services. Registered sites and bases for mobile equipment are allocated an LSPN.

Practices intending to provide Medicare eligible diagnostic imaging services must apply to and be registered with the Department of Human Services, and then achieve accreditation, in order for Medicare benefits to be payable.

The Department of Human Services allocates and administers LSPNs. An LSPN must be submitted as part of each Medicare claim for a diagnostic imaging service.

LSPNs and the Diagnostic Imaging Accreditation Scheme

In order to provide Medicare eligible diagnostic imaging services, practices must be accredited under the Diagnostic Imaging Accreditation Scheme (DIAS) and have a current, registered LSPN with the Department of Human Services.

Practices need to apply to the Department of Human Services for an LSPN before they apply to an accreditor for accreditation under the Scheme. Accreditation under the scheme cannot be granted until a practice has obtained an LSPN from the Department of Human Services.

Maintaining registration

Every 12 months the Department of Human Services writes to practices and asks them to update their registration details. If a site fails to comply with this request, their registration may be suspended for up to 3 months. Registration is cancelled by a practice’s accreditor after a continuous period of 3 months suspension, and the Department of Human Services ceases Medicare payments for diagnostic imaging services delivered by the practice.
